CESS 2021

OVERVIEW

Net-Zero Emissions by 2050

Recently, major countries around the world have announced their ambitious ‘carbon neutrality’ goals. Faced with the critical challenges of climate crisis response and economic growth, countries are declaring ‘2050 carbon neutrality’ goals to create a sustainable future, which needs to be supported with investments in eco-friendly industries and technologies. On October 28, the South Korea government also declared their national target of achieving carbon neutrality by 2050. Currently, our society is in pressing need to transition to a Low-carbon Circular Economy. The announcement of the “Korean Green New Deal” and the “2050 Carbon Neutral Promotion Strategy,” also highlights the critical role of the Circular Economy and sustainable waste solutions to achieve the country’s climate targets.

Sustainable measures to achieve Carbon Neutrality

IPSOS, a global leader in market research, conducted a survey on climate change and COVID-19 during the 2020 celebration of the Earth Day. It was participated by 20,590 people, of ages 16-74, from 29 countries. The survey aimed to determine the Top 3 environmental challenges faced by countries, which can be perceived as the major environmental issues that country leaders should be most concerned about. While all other countries identified climate change as their foremost concern, South Koreans cited waste disposals as their primary environmental concern.

The climate crisis and waste problems are cited as the most pressing and urgent issues for citizens around the globe, including in South Korea, and calls for solutions. Solving these challenges presents a path towards a sustainable and carbon-neutral future.

Seeking sustainable waste management solutions

The world is now in search for new markets to prepare to transition towards circular economy. In particular, companies seek sustainable waste management solutions and ESG management systems to realize carbon neutrality in our society. As people are at the core of these actions, creating jobs related to technology development is also essential. This could contribute to the achievement of sustainable waste management, greenhouse gas reduction, and creating momentum for economic growth.
